Music Memories

Music Memories

St Martin’s hosts a weekly music therapy group that welcomes people with dementia along with a family member, carer, friend or neighbour.

Led by a specialist music therapist, the group offers structured sessions that combine a range of activities including music, rhythm, language and song.

The transformative power of music therapy is well-documented. Research shows that music stimulates multiple areas of the brain, offering significant benefits for people with dementia. It can lift mood, reduce anxiety, evoke memories, and foster connection with loved ones. A simple starting point might involve identifying favourite songs, creating a playlist (perhaps on a streaming platform), and incorporating music into daily routines to enhance care.

Occasionally, we also hold sing-alongs sharing well- known songs, hymns and carols, often evoking happy memories of childhood and family celebrations.

If this sounds like something that could support someone in your family, why not give it a try?

Music Memories – the Dementia Music Therapy Group meets on Tuesdays from 10.30 to 11.30am in the Canterbury Rooms at St Martin’s Church, KT24 6RL
